Lincoln Christian heads into another big week of district play, as the Bulldogs got another two-game sweep and remained undefeated in 3A-6 play.
Lincoln (15-4) beat Wyandotte 12-9 and 9-7 last week before getting rained out over the weekend in scheduled games vs. Glenpool and NOAH.
The Bulldogs have a big two-game set ahead of them beginning this afternoon, when Lincoln travels to Claremore Sequoyah before hosting the Eagles on Tuesday.
"This is the biggest district series of the season," said Lincoln head coach Greg Harmon. "They are right behind us at 5-1 in district. A sweep would put us in the driver's seat for the district, and we would still be in good shape with a split."
Because of the rainouts last week, Harmon has his top four pitchers available for the Claremore Sequoyah series early this week.
"The plan is for us to use all four health arms across the two games," Harmon said. "They are all healthy and ready to go.
That includes senior Carter Ricke, who has battled back from a shoulder injury and looked good last week.
After the Claremore Sequoyah series, Lincoln will be taking part in the Pinnacle Conference Festival at Regent Prep on Thursday-Saturday.
"It will be a quality event with a lot of good teams in a non-district type of event," said Harmon. "It's a opportunity to compete against conference schools and continue developing. The more quality at-bats, reps in the field and reps on the mound we can get is great for this time of year."
The Bulldogs are at Claremore Sequoyah today and hosting the Eagles tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on both days.
Lincoln will play Cascia Hall on Thursday at 1 p.m. to open the Pinnacle Conference Festival.
The Bulldogs play Metro Christian on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before wrapping up on Saturday vs. Rejoice Christian at 4 p.m.
LINCOLN 12, WYANDOTTE 9
Lincoln trailed last Monday at home vs. Wyandotte, as the Bulldogs were down 6-5 heading into the bottom of the 6th.
But the Bulldogs got the bats going, scoring seven runs to take a 12-6 lead.
AIden Hendren was 2-for-2 with a double and homer in the win, as the sophomore led the way for Lincoln.
Beaux Brumble had a career day, going 4-of-4 at the plate wit ha double and six RBIs in the win.
Lane Hunter had a 2-run double for Lincoln, as well, while senior Chandler Cozbey had two hits and two RBIs from his leadoff spot.
"We had a strong day at the plate up and down the lineup, which made up for where we struggled in the field," said Harmon.
Lincoln had five errors in the win.
"We had some uncharacteristically bad plays in the field and had multiple errors on soft contact, which could have costed us the game," Harmon said. "But our team found a way to win when we could have easily not. Wyandotte is good up and down the lineup. They are hard to strike out and they put the ball in play consistently, which makes you make a bunch of plays in the field."
Cozbey started and went four innings, allowing six runs (two earned) and eight hits. He struck out five.
Cade Ryan pitched the final three innings in relief, allowing three unearned runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out six hitters.
Wyandotte took an early 1-0 lead in the 1st before Lincoln responded with three runs in the 2nd.
The Bears answered with four in the 3rd before Lincoln cut the deficit to 5-4 with two more runs in the bottom half.
Wyandotte added a run to make it 6-4 in the top of the 4th.
LINCOLN 9, WYANDOTTE 7
The two teams played another close game on Tuesday, as Lincoln was able to find a way late, once again, to stay unbeaten in district play.
After Wyandotte scored three runs in the 5th and 6th to take a 7-5 lead, Lincoln responded at the plate and on the mound.
The Bulldogs leaned on their seniors, as Ricke led off the top of the 7th with a leadoff double, followed by a big bomb from Lane Hunter two batters later to tie the game..
"Lane has been swinging the bat well for us," said Harmon. "He started the season off so well and then slumped a little but has really been big lately."
After he got out of a bases loaded, two-out jam in the 6th, Harmon gave the ball back to Ricke for the bottom of the 7th with the game tied, and the senior took over.
Ricke struck out the side before Hendren drove in two in the top of the 8th, as Reed Martin and Cozbey scored on an error by Wyandotte.
Ricke struck out two hitters in a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 8th to close it out.
"He took the ball and was not going to let us lose" said Harmon. "He had both his fastball and slider working big time and his presence out there was crucial for us."
Ricke worked 2.1 shutout innings in relief with six strikeouts after Carter Hunter started.
He pitched 5.2 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned). He allowed six hits and three walks, striking out nine hitters.
Cozbey was 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI, while Cole Dooley also had two hits including a triple.Â
Lane Hunter was 2-for-5 in the win, while Major Brooks was 2-for-3 for Lincoln.
