The Lincoln tennis teams continued their stellar seasons last week, as the boys and girls had impressive performances after coming back from spring break.
The boys had a dramatic tournament win at the Jim Hollis Invitational in Pryor on Friday, while the girls took runner-up at the same event on Thursday.
Both teams also competed well at Union earlier in the week, picking up wins in singles and doubles.
"We had another really strong week of shaking off the dust from spring break," said Lincoln head coach Ty Barrett.
At Pryor on Friday, the boys took home the title at the end, as seniors Jack Milligan and Austin Phelan won No. 2 doubles to secure the tournament championship.
"We found ourselves up 9-8 in a 10-point super tiebreak, but the duo of Jack and Austin prevailed to secure their title as well as the teams," Barrett said.Â
Lincoln battled with top-10 teams in 4A (Grove and Wagoner), as well as tournament host Pryor, a solid 5A team, to close it out at the end.
"Our boys brought all the drama on Friday as they played probably their best tennis of the season to date," Barrett said.
Seniors Grayson Hampton and Aiden Tyler went 3-0, just like Milligan and Phelan, to take home the No. 1 doubles title in a win over a returning state-placing duo from Wagoner.
Sophomores Lincoln Nelson and Micah Wagner both finished 2-1 in the tournament, as they took home 3rd in both No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
"Everyone performed well as no one placed lower than third and every point mattered in the tight team race," Barrett said. "I'm really proud of all the kids and excited to take on Metro at LaFortune Tuesday afternoon and to compete in one of the best 4A tournaments in the state next week in Henryetta."
The girls came up just short in the finals, as Lincoln narrowly finished behind tournament champion Grove.
Senior Avarie Castagna and junior Karlie Jones went undefeated at 3-0 in the tournament, taking home the No. 2 doubles title to lead Lincoln.
"The girls had a really impressive performance on Thursday at Pryor," Barrett said. "Karlie and Avarie continued their tear to start the season at No. 2 doubles, getting the duo's record up to 10 wins together and another tournament championship."
Lincoln also got a strong performance from junior Grace Wheeler, who made her season debut by going 2-1 and taking 3rd in No. 1 singles.
"Grace made her first tournament start of the year and made her presence felt by getting 3rd and helping us in the team race," Barrett said.
Junior Baylee Postier took home 4th for Lincoln in No. 2 singles.Â
"Baylee also made her first varsity start and finished 4th after winning a tight match in the first round," Barrett said.
Seniors Francesca Rollandini and Nina Ross went 2-1 to take 2nd in No. 1 doubles at Pryor.
Barrett highlighted the strong play earlier in the week at Union, as the girls continued to show their depth being a strength.
"We began the week with some duals at Union, that featured lots of wins and great play from our best players like Frannie, Nina, Grace, Mia Mattson, Avarie and Karlie," Barrett said. "That group is really becoming a dependable bunch that gives us lots of flexibility and are playing the best tennis of their careers."
Hampton also joined the team with the close of basketball season, something that only strengthened a group that was already playing well.
"The boys played really well at Union and we got Grayson Hampton back from basketball and he made his presence felt immediately, by going 5-0 on the week with fellow senior partner Aiden Tyler," Barrett said.Â
Both teams will be at Lafortune for a dual with Metro on Tuesday before heading to the Henryetta Classic. The boys will play on Thursday at Henryetta, while the girls take the court on Friday.
The teams will be at the Seminole Tournament next Monday before returning to Lafortune next Wednesday to host the LCS Bulldog Classic.Â
