The Lincoln cross country teams dominated once again on Saturday, cruising to regional team titles in preparation for state this weekend.
Both teams were regional champs behind strong performances from groups of individuals last Saturday in Henryetta at the regional qualifier in Class 4A.
The girls had five of the top six finishers and six of the top nine, as they will look for their 3rd straight state title and 5th overall as a program.
The boys, meanwhile, finished in each of the top three individual spots, as well as six of the top nine also, as they aim for their 4th title in-a-row and 9th overall, all in the last 12 years.
Both Lincoln teams battled wet conditions to run well and capture another meet championship.
"We arrived and noticed the radar indicated rain," said Lincoln head coach Stephen Lewelling. "Sure enough, we had lightning delay us about two hours. But what I noticed was the kids wearing great spirits and enjoyed being together so it made the time fly by."
Lewelling said the teams navigated the tougher course because of the conditions well, and hopes it will prepare them for this weekend.
"The course was muddy and slick, and it wasn't marked too well so it was a good challenge for us," he said.
Junior Tennyson Housley took home the individual regional title for the girls, running 12:04 in the 2-mile.
Housley won state as a freshman and is looking to capture her second individual title, while leading Lincoln to another team championship. She was state runner-up last fall.
She was followed by freshman Madi Miller in 3rd with a time of 12:10, as well as junior Bentley Stewart in 4th at 12:22.
Freshmen Isabella Truitt and Isabella Ramirez were 5th and 6th for the Bulldogs, as Truitt finished at 12:29 and Ramirez was closed behind at 12:32.
Freshman Brea Garner was 9th for Lincoln with a time of 12:54.
"The girls ran as a pack the 1st mile or so then they took off," said Lewelling. "It was fun to watch the race develop and see tennis and take control."
Lewelling bragged on the group as a whole, speaking on their competitiveness pushing each other to crowd the top of the leaderboard.
"We have such an incredible group that one of our top five, on the right day could have been the regional champion," said Lewelling. "Being the girls first 2-mile race of the season, it was encouraging to see such success with the perfect score."
The boys were led by junior Ty Brooks, who finished as regional champ with a time of 16:40.
Brooks was the state runner-up last fall while helping Lincoln to the team title.
Fellow junior Sammy Farris and senior Trevor Hacker were both just behind and battled it out in a close finish for 2nd.
Farris edged Hacker by less than a quarter of a second, as they both finished at 16:49.
Senior Garner McAfee was 7th, running 17:16 in the 5k event, while junior Gabe Sword was 8th at 17:18 and sophomore Noah Caughey was 9th at 17:27.
"The boys took it out relatively conservatively and built up to what would end up being a dominant performance," said Lewelling. "We were first second and third and scored a very low 21 points."
As the state meet approaches this weekend in North Rock Creek (just outside of Shawnee), Lewelling believes his team is ready and prepared to go be in the moment, but must stay focused day-by-day.
"Both teams are in a great position for state but we know that when you line up the clock reads zero for all teams and anything can happen," he said. "So we stay focused on 'today.' When I change anything heading into state, we just keep leaning into the process of getting better."
The girls get started at 8:30 a.m. with the boys to follow at 9 a.m. on Saturday.Â
