Bulldogs Capture Regional Titles, Aim for Two More State Titles on Saturday

Lincoln's cross country teams had another big weekend, as the Bulldogs took home two regional titles and will look to cap off another banner season this weekend at state.

The boys and girls each were regional champions on Saturday afternoon, as both programs showed out at just the right time in mid-October.

The girls had the lowest score in Class 3A across the state at regionals and were led by senior Bentley Stewart and sophomores Madi Miller and Isabelle Truitt.

Stewart was the regional champ, as the senior looks to continue a historic career as a Bulldog in her final senior at Lincoln.

She ran 12:10:13 to take individual honors.

Miller was neck-and-neck with Stewart, finishing at 12:10:19, as the underclassmen has been dominant in her young Lincoln career.

Truitt was 4th with a time of 12:42, continuing her strong season for Lincoln.

"The girls were led by Bentley and Madi as they finished together,' said Lincoln head coach Stephen Lewelling. "Izzy ran well, placing 4th, and Emmy had a huge day and placed 6th."

Emerson Smith was 6th overall for Lincoln with a time of 13:11, while Evie Sullivan finished in the top 15 with a time of 14:00.

"Evie was our final scorer, placing just inside the top 15 and earning herself a medal," said Lewelling.

Anna Bouldin was in the top 30 after running 14:58, while Hartley Arndt finished 32nd with a time of 15:05.

"It was also great to see Anna and Hartley running for the varsity squad as Bella and Brea rested to prepare for state," said Lewelling.

Lewelling's girls squad will aim for the program's 6th state title on Saturday at Carl Albert High School. It would be the program's 4th state championship in a row.

"As a team, we had the lowest score among the three egional sites for 3A but there are very good teams coming from other parts of the state," said Lewelling. "We'll have our hands full at state but I'm confident we'll have a great day."

On the boys side, it was more of the same, as Lincoln had five runners in the top 11 and all seven Bulldogs finished in the top 17.

Senior Ty Brooks, likely the most decorated runner in school history, finished second individually with a time of 16:18.

Noah Caughey, who has had a tremendous breakout season, was 3rd behind Brooks at 16:38.

"The boys were equally impressive, putting all seven runners inside the top 20," said Lewelling. "Led by Ty and Noah in 2nd and 3rd, they were a strong duo to give us the low score of 34."

Ben Bouldin was 8th overall, running 17:37, while Landon Durborow was 10th at 1743.

Cristiano Sejera was 11th for Lincoln with a time of 17:59, while Logan Roe was 16th, running 18:33 and Lincoln Sutton was 17th at 18:39.

"Ben, Landon, and Cristiano all medalled and made the team too much to overcome for the other squads we were up against," said Lewelling. "Lincoln and Logan will be our other varsity runners at state and will be a strong piece of our depth."

The boys will be looking for the program's 10th state title overall, all coming in the last 13 years.

It would be the boys 5th state championship in-a-row.

"For the team title, we are nearly neck-and-neck with the other two regional champion teams," said Lewelling. "We have to run great to pull off our 5th consecutive state title and I'm excited to see us come together for the highlight of the year."

Lewelling, who took over the program in 2016, has led Lincoln to 12 cross country state titles, has been blessed to coach another amazing group this fall.

"I've enjoyed coaching this group immensely," he said. "From the seniors who have led sacrificially to the freshmen who've come in and made an impact right away to the guys who do such a great job of serving day in and day out. This has been a special year and I'm sad it's coming to an end."

Lewelling and his group are focused on controlling what they can control heading into the biggest day of the year.

Their mindset is built on their foundation in Christ and trusting in that.

"For roughly 20 weeks our kids have been training for this moment but the key message is this: our identity is in Christ," said Lewelling. "We are children of God and whatever else comes is from being in Him—Matthew 6:33: 'But seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you.'"

The girls get going at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, while the boys follow at 11 a.m.
