Boys Open New Year With Clutch 52-50 Home Win vs. Holland Hall

No. 10 Lincoln got a big conference win on Tuesday night, as the Bulldogs held on to get back to .500 in a 52-50 win at home over Holland Hall.

The Bulldogs (5-5) withstood a late rally from the Dutch in the 4th and closed things out thanks to a career performance from senior Chandler Cozbey.

The senior poured in 30 points, while adding five rebounds and two assists in the win.

"Chandler had one of the best games a point guard has played for us here at Lincoln," said head coach Jonathan Hopkins. "Playing the top of our zone, he carried the load for us on offense and defense. His perimeter defense was a key reason why we limited them to just four made threes on the night. He was special."

After trailing in the first half, Lincoln went on a 12-2 run to close the first half to take a 25-18 lead into the locker room.

The Bulldogs led for the entirety of the second half and held a 47-39 edge midway through the 4th before Holland Hall made its final run.

The Dutch cut the lead to 51-50 in the closing seconds, but Cozbey hit a late free throw and Holland Hall's final attempt was off line as the buzzer sounded.

"I was really proud of our guys," said Hopkins. "Holland Hall is a very-well coached team. They do a great job of taking away our strengths, and they do not beat themselves. They are a very skilled team with really good shooters. We had two points of focus — contesting and limiting their 3-point looks and out rebound them."

Lincoln held Holland Hall to just 4-of-17 (23%) from three and played well inside, winning on the glass 26-21 and owning a 32-22 edge in paint scoring.

"Our guys did a great job of executing the game plan, " said Hopkins. "They only had five offensive rebounds and only two second chance points."

Lincoln shot 42% form the floor as a team and forced 13 turnovers, scoring 11 points off of.

The Bulldogs were also 11-of-14 (79%) from the foul line in the win, which as key down the home stretch.

"We knew the game was going to be a dog fight, and I was not surprised that it came down to a last second shot," Hopkins said. "'m just glad we had two really good stretches in the 2nd and 4th quarters to give us a little bit of a cushion by the middle of the 4th."

"We need to tighten up our ball control at the end of the game, but overall that was the best job we've done at executing a game plan."

Senior Chase Jobe was steady for the Bulldogs, finishing with eight points, seven rebounds and two assists in the win.

Another senior, Jamie Plocch, had four points and eight rebounds, playing big for Lincoln inside.

"His presence inside was a huge reason why we limited them to just 22 points in the paint," said Hopkins.

The Bulldogs held Holland Hall to just 43% from the floor in the game.

"I felt like we played as a unit on defense," Hopkins said. "We did a great job reacting to each other. Holding a team like that to 43% shooting from the floor is definitely something to be proud of."

Hopkins was also proud of two sophomores, as Keller Tarp and Damyan Stokes each made big shots during key moments of the game.

"I also have to give our two starting sophomores a ton of credit," Hopkins said." Each played solid defense, and each hit a three that was critical to our runs in the first and second halves. Both showed a ton of poise for such a big game."

Lincoln is back in action tonight when the Bulldogs host Carl Albert in the opening round of the Lincoln Winter Classic at 8:30 p.m.
