WEEK 9 PREVIEW: No. 1 Lincoln Returns Home to Host Eufaula with District Title in Sight

No. 1 Lincoln Christian is back home tomorrow night, as the Bulldogs look to remain undefeated when they host Eufaula.

Lincoln (8-0, 5-0) has been completely dominant in 3A-3, outscoring their opponent 283-39.

The Bulldogs are currently riding a 22-game win streak and have won 41 straight district games dating back to 2018.

Eufaula (2-6, 1-4) comes to town after losing 37-27 to Idabel last week. The Ironheads won at Stigler 36-7 two weeks ago, snapping a 4-game skid that included an 0-3 start in district play.

"Their record is misleading," said Lincoln head football coach Jerry Ricke. "They are a stronger team that it suggests."

Lincoln cruised to a 68-12 win at Checotah last week, racing out to a 55-12 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs won 48-0 at Muldrow over fall break, a week after beating Locust Grove 63-20  at home. Lincoln also won 55-0 at Holland Hall and 49-7 over Stigler at home in district play.

Lincoln opened the season by beating Victory Christian 56-0 on the road.

The Bulldogs followed that up with a big road win at No. 2 Heritage Hall, coming from down double-digits at half to beat the Chargers 28-20.

Lincoln won its home opener a week later, beating No. 2 Shiloh Christian (Ark.) 38-14 in dominating fashion.

The Bulldogs have won the lone matchup against Eufaula in 2008, beating the Ironheads 58-26 in the 2nd round of the Class 2A playoffs.

Lincoln can all but wrap up its 7th straight district title with a win on Friday night.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

OFFENSIVE PREVIEW

The Bulldogs continue to put up outstanding numbers offensively, and that was no different at Checotah last week.

Lincoln racked up 570 yards on offense, thanks to another strong performance from junior quarterback Carter Ricke and the passing game, and 357 rushing yards from the backs and offensive line.

Ricke was 11-of-13 for 213 yards and five touchdowns in the win. The junior has completed 75% of his passes on the season, throwing for 1,805 yards and 26 touchdowns to just six interceptions.

Ricke connected with Jack Milligan seven times for 92 yards and three touchdowns.

Milligan has really come on as of late, as the senior has seven touchdowns in the last five games.

"He has played exceptionally well," Ricke said. "He is showing a ton of confidence and has been executing really well, both in practice and during games."

Milligan has 23 receptions for 347 yards and seven scores on the year.

Ricke's other top target, fellow senior Kylan Schultheis, caught a touchdown in each of the first six games.

The senior wideout leads the team in catches, yards and touchdowns, but has been relatively quiet the last two games, with just four catches for 51 yards and a score.

However, Ricke talks about the important role he is playing even when he doesn't touch the ball as much.

"Kylan has been great for us," Ricke said. "He has been really selfless by taking on the role of a decoy at times to benefit the team."

Schultheis has nonetheless had an impressive first eight games as as senior, posting 30 grabs for 572 yards and eight scores.

The Lincoln running game has seemingly continued to improve every week, and that was on fully display on Friday night.

The three-headed monster of senior Dawson Fullingim, sophomore Braeden Baker and freshman CJ Wright combined to run for 260 yards on just 21 carries.

Fullingim had three touchdowns, while Baker and Wright each found the end zone twice.

The versatility that each provides makes Ricke's job as a play caller a fun one, but also remains challenging to get them all enough touches.

"They each have unique skills," Ricke said. "They can all do different things really well and that versatility is part of what makes our running game so effective."

"We have to work to keep all three fresh and hungry and it's important to make sure we get the trio as many touches as possible."

Wright leads the Bulldogs in rushing with 486 yards. The freshman averages 11 yards per carry and has scored six times. He also has 11 catches for 262 yards and four touchdowns as a receiver.

Baker has run for 461 yards in eight games, averaging 8.4 yards per carry. He's scored six touchdowns on the ground, while posting 10 catches for 223 yards and two scores as a pass catcher.

Fullingim has 375 yards rushing as a senior. He averages 8.3 per carry and leads the team with nine scores. Fullingim is also a weapon in the passing game, as well, as the big running back has just eight catches, but for 202 yards and three touchdowns.

Eufaula's top players defensively are all seniors in defensive lineman Carson Luna, linebacker Bryan Lynn and safety Maddox Bridges.

Lynn eads the team with 103 tackles. He also has three fumble recoveries and an interception. Luna has 43 stops on the year, six of which are for loss. Bridges has just 19 tackles on the year but leads the team with two picks.

DEFENSIVE PREVIEW

Lincoln continues to impress on the defensive side of the ball, as well, as the Bulldogs shut down another potent offense last week in Chectoah.

The Wildcats, averaging 47 points per game coming into last Friday's contest, were held to just one score offensively, as the other touchdown came on special teams.

Checotah had just 184 yards on 41 plays. The Wildcats had just 79 rushing yards on only 3.6 per attempt.

The Lincoln defense held Checotah to just 1-of-10 on 3rd down and allowed just eight first downs in the game.

A different task awaits this week, as Eufaula brings a run-heavy approach into tomorrow's contest.

"They do a great job running the football and they have a really big offensive line," Ricke said.

The Ironheads run for 261 yards per game, led by junior running back Peter Lee.

He averages 186 yards per game and has totaled 1,300 yards on the year, to go along with 13 touchdowns. Lee averages 7.9 yards per carry.

The quarterback, junior Ledger Folsom, has carried 94 times for 612 yards and 11 touchdowns.  Folsom doesn't throw much, but has completed 50% of his passes for 491 yards and four scores on the year.

"We will have to play well on defense," Ricke said. "They will want to run the football and control the clock."

Lincoln will look to its front seven to stop the Eufaula attack, as the group continues to play rock solid against the run and pressuring the quarterback.

Ricke highlighted several linebackers for Lincoln that have really stepped up in seniors Micah Kruse and Creed Nail, as well as junior Connor Rowlett.

Kruse has battled through injuries to play well at different spots for Lincoln, posting 17 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery.

"He has overcome some injuries and has had to adjust to a new position," Ricke said. "He has really played solidly for us."

Nail and Rowlett have also been versatile for defensive coordinator Jeff Comfort's unit.

Nail is second on the team with 39 stops, to go along with an interception, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. He also has seven tackles for loss.

Rowlett has 26 tackles on the year, as well as 2.5 sacks, which is second on the team.

"They have also both adapted to new roles," Ricke said. "They are both playing a big part on that side of the ball and each contributing to the success of that unit."

Lincoln is allowing just nine points per game to opposing offenses. Eufaula is averaging 27 points per game offensively.
